West Valley High School students Ryan Hager and Andrew Button receive prestigious band awards

The John Philip Sousa Award is the most prestigious award in the band community and is given to the student who exhibits great leadership and musicianship. The two recipients this year, Andrew Button and Fritz Weresch, were more than deserving of this award. Andrew Button, an 8 year band member, had also spent 3 years in both marching and jazz band along with 5 distinguished ratings at solo and ensemble.
Fritz Weresch tragically passed away in December, and was honored with this award posthumously in recognition of his friendly spirit that has been greatly missed within the West Valley School District band program.
The Louis Armstrong Jazz Award is the most prestigious award given to a jazz musician. Ryan Hager, a junior, displayed amazing musicianship this year with his solo vibraphone performances in Jazz Band.
