Head Coach Rob Lagerquist, is a native of Washington State , he was born in Seattle Washington and graduated from Woodway High School in 1977. He then wrestled for Highline Community College for two seasons. He transferred to Central Washington University where he earned a degree in education. He placed 7 th in the Nation at 118 pounds in 1980 at the NAIA National Tournament in Hays, Kansas .

His first head coaching job was in Ephrata. , Washington . In 1987 his team placed third in the State ‘A’ tournament.

He then moved to the lower Yakima , Valley and took over the wrestling program in Granger. While at Granger he earned his masters degree in Educational Administration, and served as Vice-Principal and Athletic Director for three years.

In 1993 he took a special education job at West Valley Jr. High where he has been ever since. He was Bob Altshuler’s assistant for seven years and has been the head coach the past seven. Bob stayed on to be Rob’s assistant coach, as well as head coach for the Rams Football Program. One of the highlights of Rob’s career was having his son Mark, wrestle for him at West Valley . Mark was team captain for two years, academic state champ at 152 pounds and he placed 5 th at 152 in state in 2006 to cap off a tremendous high school career.

Assistant Coach Darrell Smart was born in Yakima , but grew up in Salt Lake City Utah . Darrell an attorney in town has given tremendous amounts of time and financial help to the wrestling community in Yakima .

This is his third year with the Rams. He wrestled in high school in Salt Lake . He then went on to Ricks College in Rexburg Idaho where he wrestled. He then transferred for his final two years at Utah State University . Darrell still wrestles in open Greco-Roman and Freestyle tournaments. His son Shea 12 th grade, is the Rams’ varsity 160 pounder.
