School To Work
Students have the opportunity to participate in Job Shadows, Mentorships, or Internships. To see available job shadows, mentorships, or internships, check out the Yakima Chamber of Commerce Business/Education Partnership Program web site and contact Mr. Kamimoto at West Valley High School to arrange any of the following:
What is a Job Shadow?
A job shadow is an opportunity for a student to spend approximately three hours with one or more employees at a business, non-profit organization or government agency. The objective is to provide the student with an opportunity to learn as much as possible from a person working at a job in which she or he has expressed an interest. By "shadowing" a worker, the student will get a firsthand perspective of what adults do in the world of work. Additionally, the student will better understand the process of career exploration.
What is an Internship?
Internships provide students the opportunity to participate in the dual learning experience of formal in-school education and practical training in an occupational field. Educators participating enhance their knowledge of the private enterprise system enabling them to evaluate and change curriculum to teach skills required in the future. It also provides the business with a capable and valued intern who is receiving work experience and guidance in a planned program.
What is a Mentorship?
A mentorship is a formal relationship between a student and a work-site role model who provides support and encouragement to the student. A mentor helps the student become accustomed to the rules, norms and expectations of the workplace, and can provide career insight and guidance based on personal career experience. A mentor serves as a resource to students, helping them to resolve personal problems and work related issues and conflicts. Remember that the mentor program is an individualized program, set up between you and the other participant. You determine how long the program will last and how much time you commit.
