Target Writing

Assignment ONE

In this assignment you will take one topic and practice writing about it for a variety of audiences. Your goal is to demonstrate how the same news can be communicated many different ways, depending on whom the news is for. Any time you write you need to consider the AUDIENCE you are writing for so your choices will meet the needs of your audience.

FIRST: Pretend you are announcing your engagement. You want to tell everyone about this exciting event. Make up some facts and details so you can "fake" your big news!

SECOND: You will be writing about this "news" you made up in different formats. Type the name of the audience on the margin and underline it. Then, write your message! Remember, the news is the same, how you tell it will change depending on who you are telling.

Text Message or Instant Messenger to a best friend

Email to parents

Group Email to extended family and all friends

Card or letter to grandma

Newspaper announcement

Letter to former teacher or family friend

THIRD: Write a paragraph explaining the difference between formal and informal writing. Discuss how the "writing rules" change depending on the audience. Finally, comment on when each type of writing is appropriate. Could using the wrong kind of writing with the wrong audience cause problems?

Assignment TWO

In this assignment you will be analyzing the WASL Writing Prompts before you begin your drafts.

FIRST: Make a table with 7 rows and 4 columns. In the first row, label each column:

WASL Prompt

Topic

Audience

Purpose

SECOND:
For each prompt, write its number/letter, a brief (3-4 word) topic description, identify the audience and list whether your purpose is to persuade or to explain.
