Poetry Devices List

  1. Denotation & Connotation: Write a poem that takes advantage of a word's connotation and then explain why you made the word choices you did by listing other words you could have used, but didn't. See pages 37-39 if you need help.
  2. Imagery: Write a poem that make extensive use of imagery. After the poem, list every image and associated sense from the poem. See pages 49 - 52 for help.
  3. Simile & Metaphor: Write a poem, or series of shorter poems, and use at least three similes and three metaphors. See pages 60-63 for help. Underline the similes and metaphors in your final drafts.
  4. Personification: Write a poem, or series of shorter poems, and personification at least twice. See page 64 for help. Underline the personification sections in your final drafts.
  5. Apostrophe: Write a poem, or series of shorter poems, and apostrophe at least twice. See page 65 for help. Underline your apostrophe examples in the final drafts.
  6. Metonymy: Write a poem, or series of shorter poems, and use metonymy at least twice. See page 65-66 for help.
  7. Symbolism: Write two poems using symbolism. See pages 80-87 for help. After each poem write a brief explanation of the symbolism you used.
  8. Write poems which use the following rhyme patterns:
    ABAB
    AABB
    ABBA
  9. Write a poem that uses alliteration, liberally, even if you have to make it funny.
  10. Write a poem so that the shape of the words looks like the subject of the poem.
