VERY IMPORTANT SCHOOL CALENDAR UPDATE!!!!!
The West Valley School District has decided to make up the two
days of school missed due to inclement weather at the end of
the school year. Therefore, instead of ending the school year
on Tuesday, June 8, it will end on Thursday, June 10. In addition,
the District will move a scheduled non-student day on Monday,
March 1, to Wednesday, March 3. This will allow for two necessary
additional days of instruction in the current second trimester.
There may be additional adjustments to the school calendar necessary
depending on the weather conditions through the rest of January
and for the month of February.

Registration for the 2004-05 school term begins March 15. We will
be doing a variety of activities with students to help students
make the best course selection choices for their chosen post-secondary
education plan. In RAM Prep, students will have completed their
WOIS career searches and prepared their research papers. They will
have completed goal-setting activities. Counselors will have met
with each RAM Prep class to reinforce career path courses offered
here at the high school as well as options for Running Start and
YV Tech. Students will be given a copy of their graduation status
report at the time of registration. Students and parents need to
make sure that students are making the appropriate course choices
for the student’s intended post-secondary objective as well
as high school graduation.
We encourage parents to discuss course selections with their student
prior to registration. Please keep in mind that we determine staffing
and course offerings in May based on what students tell us they’re
planning on taking. When students change their minds in September,
November, or February, we cannot always accommodate them based on
irreversible decisions made in May. Decisions should be made on
the content of the course, not where their friends are or who is
teaching the class.
The Course Description Guide as well as graduation requirements
will be on-line on the web page hopefully by March 1. There are
different graduation requirements for the classes of 2005, 2006,
and 2008. We know students don’t always bring materials home,
so please access this information as you see fit.
Reading is no longer an elementary issue. We have approximately
32% of our students who read substantially below grade level (383
students). What research tells us is that students who can’t
read generally have very unproductive adult lives. We know that
the future success of our students is largely dependent on their
ability to be life-long learners and READ to LEARN new skills as
technology takes over more and more of the processes currently being
done by people. Beginning next fall, students who struggle with
reading will be identified and enrolled in a reading class. Assessments
used to determine placement in this class will include the 7th grade
WASL (Level 2 and below), 9th grade ITED, 9th grade STAR Reading
inventory (7th grade and below). Each student will be assessed to
determine the specific area(s) of deficiency and set up with an
individual prescriptive intervention plan based on individual deficiencies.
Depending on the need and individual progress, students will be
eligible to repeat the course up to 1.5 credits toward high school
graduation. This will substitute for up to 1.5 language arts electives
in the 11th and 12th grade year. Reading instruction is a new concept
for secondary teachers and certainly not something we were routinely
trained to do. We will be relying heavily on our elementary experts
as well as the work being done in other high schools across the
state to help us make a difference for our students.
Science update. The Higher Education Coordinating Board has clarified
its standards for science course requirements for college admission.
The mandatory requirement for a minimum of one year of algebra-based
science goes into effect for the college freshman class in 2010,
not 2005 as previously reported. It is still in the student’s
best interest to have a balance between physical and biological
sciences when applying to college.

2004-2005 Preregistration Set
Sophomore and Junior students will preregister for courses for the
2004-2005 school year in March. Students will be given information
packets on Monday , March 22 and will complete bubble sheets on
Thursday, March 25th. Please spend some time talking with your students
and help them make appropriate choices.

Topics will be:
Advance Placement and College in the High School classes. This is
the opportunity for qualified junior and senior students to take
challenging college-level course work with the possibility of receiving
college credit, advanced placement or both from colleges and universities.
Running Start is the opportunity for qualified junior and senior
students to take community college classes and receive both high
school and college credit.

There is something big, green, leafy, and hungry lurking on
the West Valley Stage these days, and young actors are disappearing
left and right. What can you do to save them? Go cheer them
on! But whatever you do don’t feed the plants.
Starting on March 10th at 7 PM and running each night until
March 13th you can see the most amusing and affectionate spoof
of the 1950’s sci-fi movies ever put on stage. Tickets
will be on sale at the Junior High, High School, and at Inklings
Bookshop beginning February 1. And all tickets are just $6.00.
This is the same show that is in revival on Broadway right now
and has the critics going wild. FOUR STARS!!!! Deliriously campy…this
magical “Little Shop” couldn’t be more welcome

Fortunately you don’t have to plan a trip to New York
when we bring the best to West Valley. Your students are some
of the most talented and creative singers and actors to hit
the stage, and they are very proud of the hard work and dedication
they put in to their show. Give them a little recognition and
come see The West Valley production of Little Shop of Horrors
on March 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th at the Junior High Auditorium
on 7505 Zier Rd. You’ll be glad you did, and think of
all the money you’ll save on airfare. |
Hot Guys for Charity!
For the third consecutive year, West Valley High School will
be teaming up with the Memorial Foundation/Children's Miracle
Network to raise awareness/funds for local children with special
physical needs. During the past two years, our students have
raised close to $25,000 and learned a great deal about community
involvement and philanthropy. With the announcement of this
year's Mr. West Valley Pageant contestants at the Selah/WV Basketball
game on Saturday, January 10th, we kicked off a three month
flurry of activities that will culminate in the Mr. WV Pageant
on Monday, March 29th at the Capitol Theatre. Congratulations
to the following young men who will represent WVHS in the community
on behalf of the Memorial Foundation/Children's Miracle Network:

The boys will be taking a tour of Memorial Hospital's Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit on Monday, January 19th at 10am to get a
firsthand look at one of Memorial's facilities which benefits
from CMN funds and to see some of the babies whose very survival
depends on this facility. On January 25th, the contestants and
their parents will meet at Children's Village for an informational
meeting about the Mr. WV experience. On February 14th, the boys
will be making a dash for cash at halftime of the boy's basketball
game...please bring a few greenbacks to give, if you can. Following
the game, the entire student body will be invited to attend
a post-game movie and snacks...cost will be $3. On March 6th,
they will participate in a Bowl-a-Thon vs. Eisenhower, Toppenish
and East Valley's pageant contestants at Eagle Lanes. The third
annual WVHS Faculty vs. Mr. WV Contestants Basketball Game will
be held at 6:30 pm in the Main Gym. The admission will be $3
for students and $5 for adults. Another event that will be in
its third year is the Zesta Cucina Appetizer Sale. On March
26th at Zesta Cucina in the Glenwood Square, the contestants
will be serving appetizers to all customers from 6-9 pm. All
proceeds from those appetizers will go toward WV's CMN totals.
Also in the planning stages are a Mr. WV Contestants "babysitting
night" and a possible Mr. WV Calendar. Ticket sales for
the Mr. WV Pageant will take place from March 22-26 at both
lunches at WVHS and can also be purchased at the Capitol Theatre
at the door for only $5. |
