Honors/College Prep Courses At WVHS
Highly motivated and capable students are provided a variety of options to receive rigorous college level instruction and earn college credit while in high school. These courses are in addition to the Running Start options provided through Yakima Valley Community College.
Advanced Placement:
These courses are designed by the College Board and are specifically structured to meet the AP exam criteria. In order to receive college level credit for the course, students must take the AP exam(s) in May and have the scores sent to the college(s) of their choice. The amount of credit awarded varies from college to college. Generally, a student must score 3 or better on the AP exam to be eligible for college credit. It is expected that all students enrolled in AP level courses will sit for the AP exam. The cost of each AP exam is $83.

College In the High School:

West Valley High School has agreements with both the University of Washington and Central Washington University to offer a variety of courses that meet the universities’ standards for college level credit. Our courses are taught by WV teachers who are also adjunct professors at the university level. Instructional materials and assessments are approved by the universities. In some cases, students must pass a university placement test in order to be eligible to earn the college credit. Credits are direct transcripted and may be transferred as any other college credit.

In order to earn college credit, the University of Washington requires a course fee of $299 for English 111 and 131 and $308 for U.S. History 202. There is also a $35 registration fee. If a student registers for both courses, that student only pays the registration fee once. These fee amounts are on the registration forms from the University of Washington.

Central Washington University has no restrictions on the number of students who must enroll for college credit. CWU charges $250 for each 5 credit course (1 trimester at WV).
