WV Gay Straight Alliance Constitution

  Preamble

We as the Students of West Valley High School hereby join the Gay Straight Alliance. We promise to do our best to fight homophobia and create an atmosphere of non-discrimination for all students.

Article I: Name

The name of the organization will be GSA, an acronym which stands for Gay Straight Alliance.

Article II: Purpose

The West Valley Gay-Straight Alliance is hereby formed to provide a safe place for gay, lesbian, straight, transgender, bisexual, and questioning students. It fights homophobia through effective dialogue among the students, and positive, non-discriminative education. The group creates a supportive group of open-minded students, where problems of any sort may be openly discussed. Through non-violent activism, social injustices to the homosexual population are brought to greater attention. The group also creates a large social environment, which provides members with a sense of belonging, and fun in general. The group’s sole purpose is to create an atmosphere of total non-discrimination for all students, regardless of sexual orientation.

Article III: Membership

Membership is open to all students who accept these goals: *To create a supportive and safe atmosphere for all students *To discourage others from being homophobic

Article IV: Meetings

There shall be a meeting held once every other week. There shall be officers elected at the end of every school year. Members are encouraged to attend every meeting.

Article V: Officers

The officers of the organization shall be: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Article VI: Amendments

Upon adoption of this document by a simple majority vote, further amendments will be adopted by a 2/3 vote by all attending members. Any amendment shall be presented in writing at general meetings.

Bylaws

Section One: General Matters

Article One: The name of the organization is West Valley High School Gay Straight Alliance.

Article Two : The address shall be: West Valley High School West Valley Gay Straight Alliance 9206 Zier Rd. Yakima, WA 98908

  Section Two: Membership

Article One: Membership will be limited to numbers that are healthy and safe for the club, and meeting area.

Article Two: the President, Vice-President, or Club Advisor may remove Members who do not uphold what is safe and healthy for the club.

Article Three: There will be a membership list, the list will include the person’s name, and information as to whether or not they have paid their club dues. If dues have not been paid in a timely fashion, access to the club may be denied.

Article Four: If access is denied, the person being denied may appeal to the officers of the club, and membership to the club will be judged.

Section Three: Officers

Article One: The officers of West Valley GSA will include President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Article Two: The duties of the officers will be:

• The President shall preside at all meetings, represent the organization before the public either personally, or through delegates, attend all Senate Meetings and shall perform all other functions usually attributed to this office.

• The Vice-President shall perform the functions attributed to this office. The Vice-President shall perform the duties of the President whenever the President is not able to perform such duties. If the office of President becomes vacant during the school year, the Vice-President will become the President until the next election cycle.

• The Secretary shall keep accurate minutes of all meetings, maintain official files, and keep roll of those attending the meetings.

• The Treasurer will hold the funds of the organization, and disburse them upon authorization by the proper leaders, and keep receipts and other financial data.

Section Four: Amendments

Article One: Amendments to the Bylaws may be made at any meeting by a 2/3 majority vote of all attending members. The changes will then become effective at the next meeting.

Article Two: Proposed amendments must be presented in writing at a meeting, and sponsored by one of the club officers.
