3. Pass the 10th grade Reading, Writing HSPE and the Math EOCs (Algebra 1 and Geometry).

All students need a solid foundation of reading, writing and math skills for whatever career path they follow after high school. Several statewide graduation requirements are designed to ensure that students have this foundation.
For the graduating classes of 2010-2012, students must pass a state exam or a state-approved alternative in reading and writing in order to earn a high school diploma. Some students might have already passed one or more exams of the high school Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL). Beginning in spring 2010, students who have not previously passed the WASL must take the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE), a state-approved alternative or an assessment for students in special education.
Students can meet the state’s math requirement by passing the high school math HSPE, a state-approved alternative or an assessment for students in special education, OR, earn two math credits after 10th grade. Students must have taken the math state exam once before using any of the alternatives. In addition, the math Collection of Evidence has been eliminated until math becomes a graduation requirement for the Class of 2013.
Students in the Class of 2013 will be first to be required to pass science and math high school state exams, a state-approved alternative or an assessment for students in special education. The Class of 2013 will have an additional option to choose math end-of-course exams.

NOTE: The information posted here follows Federal, State, and Local guidelines. Here is an excerpt from WVSD Policy 2410: In accordance with RCW 28A.655.061, the District will comply with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction to facilitate the process for students to obtain the Certificate of Academic Achievement or the Certificate of Individual Achievement. In accordance with RCW 28A.655.065, the District will facilitate objective alternative assessment methods for students who meet eligibility requirements, “including but not limited to attendance criteria and participation in the remediation or supplemental instruction contained in the student learning plan.” At a minimum, the student learning plan will contain provisions for the student to attend school regularly and to attend summer school. For the purpose of determining eligibility for alternative assessment methods, regular school attendance is defined as no more than six (6) absences, excused and/or unexcused, per trimester in core academic classes: language arts, social studies, math and science. For the purpose of determining eligibility for alternative assessment methods, summer school attendance must be completed in a summer school class that is aligned with the state essential academic learning requirements. Students who demonstrate a pattern of non-attendance, excused or non-excused, cannot reasonably expect to gain the core skills and knowledge necessary to meet the state academic standards. In accordance with RCW 28A.655.065, “the school district may waive attendance and/or remediation criteria for special, unavoidable circumstances.” To request a waiver of the attendance and/or remediation criteria, the student must submit the request in writing to the building principal. In the written request, the student must explain the student’s special, unavoidable circumstances. The building principal will issue a decision in writing to the student and parent/guardian regarding the student’s eligibility to participate in the objective alternative assessment.
