Biology 201 and 202….TESKE SYLLABUS 2 Trimesters
Course Overview 201
This is a basic biology course that will focus on the cell, genetics and microorganisms. Emphasis will be placed on the processes happening within the cell and the principles and applications of genetics.
Text Used :Biology (chapters 1-24), Miller/Levine, 2004.
Student Learning Objectives
As a result of required instruction the student will be able to:
1. Distinguish between living and non-living.
2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the classification system for living things.
3. Identify the structures of both a plant and animal cell, explain the function of each, and explain the major differences between the two types of cells.
4. Describe how a cell reproduces.
5. Demonstrate, in a variety of ways, knowledge of the basic principles of genetics.
6. Demonstrate knowledge of the structure and function of the following organisms:
a. Bacteria
b. Virus
c. Protist
d. Fungi
7. Demonstrate understanding of how Bacteria and Viruses cause disease.
Basics of Biology 202
1 trimester .5 credit
This course does not meet requirements for Algebra-based Science.
Prerequisite: Basics of Biology 201
Course Overview
This is a basic biology course that will focus on the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates, the basic characteristics of each of the animal phyla, and the anatomy and physiology of the human body.
Student Learning Objectives
As a result of required instruction the student will be able to:
1. Distinguish between vertebrates and invertebrates.
2. Identify similarities and differences among the major phyla of animals.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of the following processes for each of the major groups of animals: Feeding, Respiration, Circulation, Excretion, Response, Movement & Reproduction.
The groups include:
Sponges and Cnidarians
Flatworms, Roundworms, and Annelids
Mollusks
Arthropods
Echinoderms
Fish
Amphibians
Reptiles
Birds
Mammals
4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following human body systems (structure and function): nervous, skeletal, muscular, integumentary, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, endocrine, reproductive, and immune.
BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:
1) RESPECT 2) NO FOOD OR BEVERAGES 3) BE SAFE
1) Respect the following:
- Other class members.
- Property (Students will be expected to pay for damaged items due to carelessness.)
- The teacher and teaching time.
2) The feeding and liquidating of students is to be accomplished elsewhere.
3) Since safety is essential, common sense and strict observance to instructions is vital.
- Horseplay, especially during lab activities, will be dealt with harshly.
4) All disciplinary actions will be in accordance with the WVHS student handbook, which I'm
sure you've all read and memorized.
CONSEQUENCES:
1) Verbal warning. 2) Parental units are notified. 3) Administrative conference.
In the event of serious misbehavior (that is well beyond "horse play") more dramatic measures
will be taken.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:
20% Homework - Includes book assignments, worksheets and (everyone's favorite) pop
quizzes.
30% Lab work/Projects - Includes lab reports and lab performance .
50% Tests - Includes end of unit exams and comprehensive semester finals.
CREDIT - Completion of attendance requirement (below), and 60% of academic requirements.

ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES:
Although absences are not structured in to the grading system, it has been shown that numerous absences will have a serious and harmful effect on academic performance in this class. Make up all labs and tests promptly!
Tardies will require the student to make up the time by accomplishing a few chores after school.
a.k.a Restitution….Please refer to academic handbook for guidelines!
FUN FACTS:
If a student is absent on a due date, the due date is extended one day for each day absent.
If a student is absent on the day of an exam or a lab, it must be made up within the amount of days the student was absent. The student is responsible for obtaining material covered when absent, during a time that does not interfere with class.Since grades are posted, each student is responsible to find out what he/she is missing.
Due to the nature of this particular course, I have found numerous absences have always resulted in poor or failing grades.Cheating will result in a zero grade for the assignment/test, immediate referral to administrator, and parental notification. A second occurrence will result in a conference.
