FINE ART AND DESIGN
Mrs.D.Sundlee
Welcome to West Valley High School and Fine Art Program. This introductory letter is given to each student to share information about class expectations, course content, fees and a supply list. It is necessarily brief, but any additional questions can be answered by e-mailing me at sundleed@wvsd208.org, and by checking your grades on Skyward.
Your art course will be one trimester-13 weeks, and will meet daily. Because most of your work is completed in class regular attendance is a necessity. Excessive absences will not allow you to pass the class. If you miss school for health or school initiated activities, one make-up day per day of absence will be allowed for finishing work. The classroom will be open before and after school each day for make-up work. It is your responsibility to make up any missed assignments, and to keep up with due dates. At the conclusion of each project, your grades will be posted on line.
Your trimester grade will be based on the effort you have shown in researching and completing the assigned problems. Your written responses- self evaluations and notebook entries- will be an important part of your assessment for class. Be prepared to write about and discuss your work. Verbalizing concepts, using the specific vocabulary or art and engaging in critiques are part of the assessment process endorsed by the Nat’l. Art Education Association and the state assessment standards. We will be meeting these standards by asking students to respond to a series of introductory problems that focus on the elements and principles of art. We will survey historical and world culture art examples and learn to critique and analyze art work – your own and others. Studio work will involve drawing, painting, design and print making using a wide range of high quality art media. You will be carful in the use of all art materials and return them in excellent condition. Inappropriate behavior will be recognized by (1 st) a warning, (2 nd) a telephone call to your parents, and (3 rd) a referral to the administration. An art room is a community in which we all share materials and maintain a high level of trust and honesty.Courteous, honest, responsible behavior in the art room is expected at all times.
You will be compiling your work in a 3-ring notebook and turning it in for grading periodically during the trimester. You will also make and maintain a portfolio in which to store all your later work. The objectives for each assignment will be discussed or demonstrated, and everyone will be encouraged to produce personal answers with individuality highly encouraged. We will experiment, explore, and challenge each of you to be original and productive whether you have years of experience or are just beginning as an art student. Projects will be graded on a point system with a greater number of points given for more complex projects. Both written work and practical work will be averaged and graded on a standard percentage basis. Final grades are not negotiable. The best attitude is one of the positive, open mind: “Yes, I will try.” And “Can you help me make it even better?”
You will be expected to help in the maintenance of the art room by being responsible for the materials you use – their cleaning and organizing. Each day you will be using expensive art materials, and they must be put away neatly for you and others to use the next day. It is a mark of maturity that you do your share of clean-up responsibly every day. Sloppy or neglected clean-up hurts everyone and wastes good materials. Be responsible and always s do your share.Honesty is expected at all times.
Each student is asked to pay a nominal art fee of $25.00 to cover the cost of providing quality art supplies for the art room. It is payable in the main office the first week of the trimester before school and during lunch. Your receipt must be brought to the art room and shown to me for recording nonpayment of fees results in a failing grade. Report cards are withheld until fees are paid in full.
You will need to bring in the following supplies for your daily use:
These personal supplies should be brought with you to class and kept in a zippered pouch inside your notebook or portfolio. Do not expect to borrow them- bring your own.
I will expect your cooperation in meeting these objectives for your art class. It will be a pleasure to work with you, and see the art work you will produce this trimester. Have this letter signed by your parents, and put in as the first page in your notebook.
I have read and agree to the class expectations for Fine Arts as outlined in this letter.
