Reflection Webquest
Objectives: Students will gain a better understanding of the following
- The rules of reflection
- Specular vs diffuse reflection
- The effects of two plane mirrors
- Concave and convex mirrors
- Object and image relationships in all types of mirrors
- The "three key rays"
Directions: Check out the links within each titled section, then answer the
questions. More importantly, understand the answers to each question. (Let me
know if there are any links that do not work.)
Reflection and Diffused Reflection
- Briefly summarize the difference between specular and diffuse reflection.
- State the rules of reflection, concerning the angles of incidence and reflection,
where and how the image is (in a plane mirror), and what type of image it
is.
- How did you do in the "Mirror Game"?
- How did the "billiard" type of observation help those who thought
light was made out of particles?
- What are two reasons why a billiard ball will not follow the "rule"
of reflection?
Multiple Mirrors
- Summarize the concepts of two plane mirrors at various angles
Curved Mirrors
- Describe what happens to the image in a concave (converging) mirror, when
the object starts very far away, and moves to the mirror until the object
is touching the mirror.
- Do the same thing with a convex (diverging) mirror
- When is the image virtual, and when is the image real, in both a converging
and diverging mirror? (Where does the object have to be placed?)
- Use the best link to diagram the three key rays in both a converging and
diverging mirror.
- What is significant about the placement of an object at 2f in both types
of mirrors?
- What is significant about the placement of an object at f in both types
of mirrors?
- Spend some time messing with the "applets" to gain a better understanding
of the material. Okay?
Refer to the objectives at the top of this document and make sure you really
do have a good understanding of them.
