Format and Grading of the AP Chemistry Exam

The AP Chemistry test is a three-hour long, two-section test that attempts to cover the material you would learn in a college first-year chemistry course. The test has two main parts. Look closely at each of the subsections, the times and the grading percentages.

Part 1: Multiple Choice - 90 minutes
45% of the overall test 50% = 5, 35% = 4, 25% = 3

(1pt for correct answer) – (1/4 x incorrect)
about 75 Questions No Calculators!

Part 2: Free Response - 90 minutes
55% of the overall grade

A) Mathematical Calculations (40 min. with calculator)
     1) Equilibrium calculation (Gases, acid/base, or solubility) - 20% of free response (11% overall).
     2) Choose one of two more questions - 20% of free response (11% overall)

B) Predicting Products & Essays (50 min. without calculator)
      1) Predicting Products (Writing Chemical Equations)
15% of the free response (8.25% overall) choose 5 out of 8,
3 pts total, 1pt for correct reactants, 2pts for correct product
     2) Essays
          a) One essay questions, which is related to the laboratory
15% of the free response (8.3% overall)

          b) Choose two of four remaining essay questions
15% each, or 30% of the free response (16.6% overall)

The questions in this section provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their quantitative problem-solving skills, their knowledge of chemical reactions, and their ability to reason and explain ideas in a logical and coherent fashion.
