Athletic Training

Advanced Athletic Training (A & B)

2 Trimesters Each .5 Credit/Trimester .5 Optional Credit Per Trimester May be Earned

Pre-requisite for Advanced Athletic Training: Passed Intro to Sports with a "C" or better.

This course may be used for either a Laboratory Science or an Occupational Education credit .

Course Overview: This vocational/science course continues on from the Intro to Sports Therapy courses, with both academic coursework, health concepts and hands-on practical application skills on the upper extremity and trunk. The student learns Advanced First Aid/ CPR including use of AED (Automated External Defibrillator), advanced treatment and rehabilitation, and Sports Medicine techniques that prepare students for post-secondary education in the medical, science, and health professions, or work in health/fitness professions.

The West Valley Sports Therapy Internship Program combines the 90 hours of classroom instruction and a supervised, clinical lab in the area of Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. This Internship Program also offers an off-site rotation at a local physical therapy clinic.

Student Learning Objectives:

1) Understand, demonstrate and apply Advanced First Aid/ CPR/AED skills.

2) Understand the importance of injury prevention, proper emergency care, acute treatment, and medical referral of the injured.

3) Understand, demonstrate and evaluate various injuries to the upper extremity and trunk.

4) Understand and demonstrate the concept of physical fitness, components of conditioning and physical training, and stretching techniques for various athletic populations.

5) Understand, demonstrate and apply treatment and rehabilitation techniques for various musculoskeletal and nervous system injuries.

6) Understand, demonstrate and apply various modalities for various musculoskeletal injuries.

7) Understand, demonstrate and apply various taping/bracing/wrapping/splinting techniques.

8) Demonstrate appropriate work ethics and patient care in a professional and confidential manner.

9) Demonstrate effective work habits and effective communication skills with Sports Therapy staff, coaches, athletes, parents, and instructor.

10) Demonstrate leadership skills.
