Naturalization Quiz

There are three basic ways to become an American citizen:

Americans are often chuckled at because foreigners often know more about our government system than citizens. This project challenges you to buck that trend!

Using the Internet, search for sample Naturalization Quizzes. People applying for citizenship are usually given a study guide of about 100 questions and a quiz of about 20 questions. Once you have located a Naturalization Quiz you think is legitimate (check who posted it to the web), study it until you know 100% of the answers.

Assignment:

  1. Choose 10 — 20 questions you think are crucial for demonstrating good citizenship and a basic understanding of how our government and culture work. Type them into a simple quiz. Make a separate key.
  2. Give the quiz to at least 5 people (at least 1 should NOT be a HS student). Score the quizzes and keep track of the Right/Wrong tally for each question on a master quiz.
  3. Write a one-page paper that addresses any or all of the following: how well you did on the quiz at first, the scores people earned on your quiz, any surprises from the process, comments on what is and isn’t included in the test, etc. The key to a good paper is REFLECTION — don’t just write about what happened — write about what you THINK about what happened.
  4. Be prepared — when you turn in these materials the teacher will quiz you verbally from the study guide you submit!
  5. What do I turn in?

    A

All pieces of the assignment show attention to detail, learning, editing and preparation on the part of the student. There are few changes that could be made to improve the quality of the work. Extras may be included that reflect the student’s commitment to learning.

    B

Each of the 5 parts had been edited at least once for spelling, grammar and organization. A few of the pieces could be more organized or neater, but it is clear the student took each piece seriously and tried to learn while completing the work. The student was prepared for the oral quiz — only a few questions stumped them.

    C

All 5 parts of the assignment have been completed. One or more of them needs revisions to bring the writing level, the content, or the organization up to 12th grade level. It is difficult to tell if the student learned the basics. The student was not thoroughly prepared for the oral quiz.
