MIDDLE EAST BASICS
for CWP in RAP

*You need a packet from the teacher to complete this project. Please get it.

It is important for EVERY AMERICAN to understand the basic issues causing conflict in the Middle East. Currently, the USA is dependent on the oil this part of the world provides so we are involved whether we like it or not. Through readings, maps and essays you will develop a basic understanding of the Jewish and Islamic (Muslim) religions, peoples and the conflict they have over land, especially around the country of Israel.

Activities to complete:

  1. READINGS - You will read info in the packet as well as additional online sources. Please use the internet WITH CARE. There are a lot of very biased web sites out there on these issues. Use links from the HS library page only, please! The readings in the packets come with worksheets (2 total) that must be completed.
  2. MAPS - The packet contains a few maps for you to label and to use to quiz yourself. You will be taking a map test WITHOUT notes. Label the maps carefully and neatly so they will be easier to study. (Yes, you need at least an 80% on the map test.)
  3. ESSAY - As the assessment of your learning, you will be writing an essay that has some REQUIRED TERMS. You will learn the meaning of those terms from the readings and your research. This should be SENIOR LEVEL writing.

FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE COVER PAGE OF THE PACKET.

YOU WILL NEED TO TELL THE TEACHER WHEN YOU ARE READY FOR THE MAP TEST.

Grading:

Worksheets: Graded with a key, must get at least 80% or redo.

Maps: Must complete the maps in the packet. Score will come from the Map Test. No notes on the test. 80% minimum required.

Essay:

A
A quality essay with well-formulated paragraphs and evidence of proofreading. This essay obviously uses the vocab words and does so to effectively to tell the story of this region. Extra research is obvious.
B
This organized essay is well-written. The vocabulary words are easy to spot and are used to tell the story of the region. The writing shows a command of the information and extra care to make the meaning of the words clear.
C
All of the vocab words are identified, but some may not be clearly defined or used appropriately. Understanding is evident, but a deeper meaning is not clear from the writing.
