How do I complete the Writing Fundamentals Course?

  1. Read the Syllabus. It lists every assignment you need to do and tells you why it is important. Many assignments are listed multiple times because they apply to more than one learning goal - you only have to do the assignment once.
  2. Begin the A+ lessons. Pay attention to the writing rules you are learning or reviewing - you will be expected to use them in your writing!
  3. Do the "pre-writing" assignments first. They will go the fastest and help you warm up for the essay writing.
    • WASL Writing Worksheet
    • Topic Webbing
    • Target Writing
    • Fix Me Up
  4. Next, work on the WASL Writing Prompts. You need to write a one to two page essay for each prompt. Remember that you will need a rough and a final draft for each. Don't spend more than 2 or 3 hours on each essay - they shouldn't require any research beyond what is already in your head. These are actual essay prompts from past WASL tests. Students must complete the essay on that test day, so make this a realistic practice for yourself.
  5. Finally, complete the Reflection Essays. These ask you to explain your writing skills and how they compare to the state standards. You will need to refer back to the syllabus for the standards.
