Unit 1: Poetry /100 points
*Read ALL of each chapter including the introductions and comments to the various poems. It will help you answer the Qs!
Using Sound and Sense , complete the following chapters and answer all questions in each chapter.

Select one of the poems from this book that you hadnt read before.
- Type it out using the original formatting
- Paraphrase it (like the example on page 23 and 24)
- Explain, in at least two paragraphs, why this poem was memorable to you. Consider the following Qs as you brainstorm what to write: Did it remind you of something? Did the language or imagery paint a clear picture for you? Did you like the way it sounded when it was read aloud? Is the theme something that is important to you?
Unit 2: Modern Fiction /100 points
- Read the authors biography and the story "Big Two-Hearted River" by Ernest Hemingway on pages 470-485 and answer Qs 1-5 on page 485.
- Read the authors biography and the story "Winter Dreams" by F. Scott Fitzgerald on pgs. 486-503 and answer Qs 1-5 and the Character Qs on page 503.
- Read the authors biography and the story "The Bear" by William Faulkner on pgs. 504-516 and answer Qs 1-8 on page 516.
- Read the authors biography and the story "Flight" by John Steinbeck on pages 546-559 and answer the Qs 1-4 and 4 Setting Qs on page 559.
- Read the authors biography and the story "The Crop" by Flannery OConner on pages 585-592 and answer Qs 1-9.
- Complete the Composition portion on page 592.
Unit 3: Modern Nonfiction /65 points
- Read the authors biography and the story "Walden" by E.B. White on pages 755-761 and answer Qs 1-5 on page 761.
- Read the authors biography and the story "The Creative Process" by James Baldwin on pages 765-768.
- Answer Qs 1-4.
- Complete Language and Vocabulary Qs on page 768.
- Read the authors biography and the story "Tin Lizzie" by John Dos Passos on pages 774-777.
- Do Qs 1-4 on page 777.
- Complete the Composition Exercise as well (about 1 typed page).
- Read the authors biography and the story "Barrio Boy" by Ernesto Galarza on pages 783-786.
- Answer Qs 1-3 on page 786.
- If you won the Lotto and moved to a perfect mansion on the water in Seattle What parts of the life you live now might you miss? Why? (1-2 typed pages).
- Read the authors biography and the story "American Hunger" by Richard Wright on pages 787-791.
- Answer Qs 1-3.
- Complete the Composition portion on page 791. (1-2 pages)
Unit 4: Modern Drama /60 points
- Read the authors biography and the play "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder on pages 824-862.
- Think about the Qs on pages 840,853 and 863 as you read.
- Choose 5 of the Qs from those 3 pages (5 total, that is) and answer them completely, in writing.
- Complete the Composition Q #2. Do the writing assignment for at least 5 characters. This should be typed.

Please consider the following assignments as you read so you can plan ahead and be prepared to complete them!
- Complete the Book Report for each novel - this is the w/s packet mentioned above.
- Write one paragraph for each novels main character. Explain the main issue(s) he faced while growing up and how that affected him.
- Write a 3-5 page essay (WITH A THESIS) comparing yourself to the main character you are most like. To arrange your paper, try to think of 3 events, 3 thoughts or 3 challenges you have in common with the character. For each section, use an example from your life and one from the characters life. Conclude the essay by addressing how reading about another teenager helped you understand yourself a little bit better.
