Lit & Film: Unit 1 Snow White

Purpose:

  1. Practice the skill of comparing a written storytelling to a visual storytelling.
  2. Experiment with creating animation
  3. Learn to use the movie worksheet set

Process:

  1. Read the three selected critiques of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. While they differ in length and style they include common elements. Your film reviews will need to address those same elements. (Located in the Lit & Film notebook)
  2. Watch Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Complete the movie worksheet set as you watch the movie.
  3. Read the Brothers Grimm fairy tale that inspired the movie. (Located in the Lit & Film notebook)
  4. Make a Venn Diagram that compares and contrasts the written story to the visual story. Details will show that you actually read and watched carefully. Use the notes you took on the movie worksheets.
  5. Compose a 2 to 3 page compare/contrast essay for the two tellings of the Snow White story.
  6. Create a simple animated FlipFilm with at least 15 cards. Samples are in the Lit & Film notebook.

Turn in:

* Movie worksheet set completely filled out

* Venn Diagram for story/movie

* Edited and revised FINAL copy of the essay

* FlipFilm

Q: How do you make a FlipFilm?

A: Cut some index cards in half. Think of a simple action (waving "HI" or eating) and then draw the first picture. Now, think of all the in between steps to get to the final picture (raising hand from side, moving side to side, etc.) You'll need to draw each step, just a little ahead in time, so that when you flip from back to front it appears that the picture is moving. This is a very simple animation project. Can you imagine making the entire movie of Snow White this way - no computer program to fill in the in between pictures!
