The four criteria for selection to the National Honor
Society are scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
To be eligible for West Valleys chapter of the
National Honor Society, a student must have junior or senior
standing (unless a transfer student, then he/she must have
been here for one trimester). He/she must have an
accumulative grade point average of at least 3.6. After
achieving the required grade point average, an eligible
student then must go through the following selection
process:
- All eligible students are given a Student Activity
Information Form by the Honor Society advisor. The form
is designed to learn about a students activities.
It questions prospective members as to their school
activities, leadership positions, community service,
awards and honors.
- All students who turn in a completed application form
then go through an evaluation by the entire teaching
staff. Since the candidates have already met the
scholarship criterion by virtue of their grade point
averages, this evaluation is meant to assess the
remaining criteria of leadership, service, and
character.
- All Student Activity Information Forms and faculty
evaluations are then reviewed by the Faculty Council,
which is composed of a total of five faculty members
representing the English, history, science, mathematics,
and world languages departments respectively. Students
receiving a majority vote of the Faculty Council will be
inducted into Honor Society.
- The entire selection process takes about three weeks
and tapping follows. Once selected and tapped, a student
is a member of National Honor Society as long as his/her
grade point average stays at or above a 3.6 and he/she
isnt suspended/expelled for violating the rules of
West Valley High School. Honor Society membership affords
the students the honor of wearing gold cords with their
graduation robes as well as scholarship
opportunities.
