High School & Beyond Plan
These assignments might require the most thinking, but they require almost no outside research, so if you get organized and get started you should be done in just a few days.
Basically you are going to be doing THREE things (it just takes a lot of paperwork to get there).
- Planning courses for the rest of this school year.
- Planning the courses you'll take next school year.
- Finally, after you have all the assignments done you will sit down with your teacher and present your plan. At the monthly meetings, the teacher is in charge. At this conference YOU are in charge.
Current Year Plan
- Get your yellow sheet from the notebook. It should list the courses you need to complete this school year. If you need to double check that, please see your teacher or the counselor.
- Either use your school planner or get calendars from your teacher.
- Type a cover page with the following information:
- Name
- # of credits RIGHT NOW
- List classes IN PROGRESS right now, including dates you plan to be done. (EVERY assignment you have to complete should be listed on the calendar for a due date.)
- List classes you plan to complete before the end of the year, including start and end dates. (Again, on calendar, too.)
- If you plan to do a class or two over summer - write out that plan as well.
- IF you meet your goals, how many credits will you have at the beginning of next year? Will that put you behind (how much?), on track (list grade level) or ahead (how much?)
- Briefly state your plan for next school year. Some possible options: stay in NS, go to dayschool, do Running Start, do YVTech, GED, graduate (what month?), some other mix, GED...
- You should staple your typed out plan to the front of your calendar packet. ALL ASSIGNMENTS for current classes should have due dates. All other classes for this year should list a start and end date.
Next Year Plan
It gets a little messier here...depending on what your plan is you will need different paperwork. Please read carefully and ask a teacher for help if you need it. This is challenging, but shouldn't seem impossible. You might want to copy and paste this part into Word, print it, and use it as a checklist.
Basic Steps:
- Check that your Portfolio is complete. PORTFOLIO CHECKLIST
- Complete a review of your transcript; classes passed. CREDIT CHECKLIST
- Decide which programs you will attend next year
- Night School: NS class list - on website
- Day School : class list - on form
- YVTech: Application - get from teacher or counselor
- Running Start : Application and Compass Test info (see counselor)
- Plan courses you need to take next year.
- 1st - any classes you need to make up
- 2nd - in dayschool students sign up for 12 classes a year. In NS, you should plan on that many IF YOU DO HOMEWORK, less if you don't.
- 3rd - YVTech counts as a 1.0 elective every trimester (2 electives a tri, 6 total in a year) so this is about the only way to "make up credits" if you do YVTech AND 12 other classes in a year.
- Fill out the HS & BEYOND PLAN form to show your choices
- Answer the REFLECTION Qs in an essay. (This will help you plan what to say in the conference.)
Student-Led Conference
Get all of the above materials organized, in final form, and prep for the Student-Led Conference. See the GUIDELINES for some ideas. Here is the list of what you need to share:
- calendar for rest of current year; be ready to defend your plan
- next year's plan; be ready to justify your course choices, esp. electives
- your career pathway and job ideas
- best guess for when you'll graduate
- best guess for senior project as of right now
