Career Pathways
Intro Assignment
Please complete the following activities - they can be typed or handwritten (as long as it is neat and readable). The focus is not on getting DONE, it is on THINKING and making this information relevant to YOU. Please be thoughtful and sincere.
This assignment will take you less than a day.
- Make a list of 10 jobs you think you might enjoy doing.
- Make a list of 10 jobs you are sure you wouldn't like.
- Have you had any paid jobs? If so, please list them. If not, please comment on when you think you'll get your first paid job.
- List 10 adults you know and the job they currently have.
- In your own words describe the difference between JOBS and CAREERS.
WVHS uses a system, WOIS/The Career Information System, to assist students in their career exploration and research. This website groups jobs into careers and those careers into PATHWAYS. (You may have used this system in the JH if you went to WV.) In this assignment you will be learning about the Career Pathways used by WOIS. By the end of this class you should know which one or two career pathways interest you the most - and how to begin preparing for careers/jobs in those fields.
- Read the Career Pathways info provided. These are your copies - they go in your portfolio - so you can mark them up as you read. CAREER PATHWYS DESCRIPTIONS
- List the Pathways on a piece of paper . You should have a list of at least 30 jobs/careers from your first 5 questions. Please categorize each job/career in the correct Career Pathway.
- Now for the personalizing...Write one paragraph naming the Career Pathway you think is the best match to your strengths and interests. Provide some specific examples from your experiences that leads you to that Career Pathway. You can also comment on any contact or experience you've had with adults in that Pathway. If you think 2 Pathways are equally matched to you - write about both.
- Finally, name and write about the Career Pathway you think is the worst match for your strengths and interests. Again, be specific and thoughtful as you explain what you know about yourself that makes it such a bad match.
