Music Journal #2 Terms and How to Listen

  1. Type in: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony into any search engine. Listen to the 1st movement of the symphony. The first 4 notes: dee dee dee dum, is the theme. Listen for the development of the theme, throughout the movement. Can you hear the variations on the theme?
  2. Listen to the other 2 movements of Beethoven's Fifth. Does this symphony follow the traditional symphony pattern?
  3. Define the Italian terms allegro and adagio.
  4. What is program music? What is absolute music? Which kind would pop music be? How about country? Or rock?
  5. What is the main difference between a symphony and a concerto?
  6. Define 3 of the musical terms listed.
  7. What are some of the effects can music have on you?
  8. Choose three of the following kinds of music, and record how you feel after listening to each piece. Note: one of your choices must be a classical piece. Rock, Country, Classical, Hip Hop, New Age, Opera, Easy Listening, Rap, Big Band, Jazz, Marching Band, Instrumental, Etc. (list any additional choice)
  9. Experiment with listening to Classical music while you study, or while you are doing something that takes a lot of concentration. What did you experience?
