Certificated Mentor Teacher for Teacher Assistance Program

Qualifications: Superior teacher based on supervisor's evaluations

Demonstrated Abilities:

● Commitment to the philosophy of continuous improvement/life-long learning

● Student-centered

● Collaborative approach to improve student learning

● Provide continuing and sustained support to the beginning teacher

● Communicate openly with the beginning teacher with sensitivity to beginning teacher needs

● Listen effectively

● Provide training, strategies and guidance to the beginning teacher in the following areas:

*Classroom management

*Student discipline

*Curriculum management

*Instructional skills/variety of instructional strategies

*Assessment literacy

*Professional conduct

*Communication skills

● Incorporating the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements and grade level expectations into daily lesson plans

● Incorporating active learning into daily lesson plans

● Raising the achievement of students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds

● Positive home/school relations

Job Requirements:

● Collaborate with district staff developer/peer coach and building principal

● Assist beginning teacher with the development of a Professional Growth Plan

● Observe the beginning teacher for a minimum of four(4) hours

● Facilitate beginning teacher’s observation of experienced teachers (mentor teacher or other experienced teachers) for a minimum of four hours

● Complete observation logs

● Attend after school meetings with the district's professional development specialist (Sept. 8 and Oct. 13, 2010, and Jan. 12, Feb. 9, April 6, and June 1, 2011)

● Meet regularly (at least once per week) with beginning teacher

● Guide beginning teacher through an orientation of the daily operation of the school

● Arrange for beginning teacher to visit different teachers’ classes

● Provide feedback for beginning teacher

● Model professionalism

Stipend:

13 hours @ curriculum rate to be paid upon completion of after school meetings & observation log

Clock hours will be available for both mentors and beginning teachers

Selection Schedule:

Note: Number of positions will depend upon number of beginning teachers who qualify for state funding and who agree to participate in the Teacher Assistance Program.
