SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAPROFESSIONAL

Purpose Statement:

The job of Special Education Paraprofessional is done for the purpose/s of assisting in the supervision and instruction of special needs students, under the supervision of a certificated teacher, in a special education classroom or one on one; assisting students in performing their academic studies, daily living and special health care activities; monitoring student in a variety of different settings e.g. classroom, between classes, playground, field trips, cafeteria, etc.; and providing clerical support to teacher.

 

Directly responsible to : Classroom teacher, building principal and Special Services Director.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet

changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to

safety practices; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and

maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a

variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand

complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions

of the job includes: instructional procedures and practices, age appropriate student activities; safety practices and

procedures; conflict resolution; and stages of child development/behavior.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to

work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate

equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of

individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem

solving is required to identify issues and create actions plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed

guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the

functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining

confidentiality; and working as part of a team.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assisting in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job is performed under a generally hazard free environment and in a clean atmosphere.

Experience Previous successful experience working with children preferred.

Education High School diploma or equivalent

May be required to acquire a current first aid/CPR card

Must be knowledgeable of Junior High Math and Language Arts curriculum

and accountable to task completion requirements. Be self-initiating and self-confident,

Show enthusiasm and friendliness, and possess organizational ability.
