NAME OF POSITION: West Valley High School Cheer Advisor/Coach

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Teaching and directing various cheer skills and activities in practice situations, teaching leadership through the Washington State ’s AWSP Cheer Curriculum, attending and chaperoning performances and competitions. Supervise/oversee the Cheer Assistant (Wrestling Cheer).

THIS POSITION IS DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO: West Valley High School Principal, Athletic Director (evaluation) and Activities Director (fundraising, assemblies, student activities).

• Dates Activity Starts and Finishes (approximate): Spring Tryouts (April) and Summer Camp (June and/or July), Fall practices (begin in August), with Fall games from August 31-December 6 (if football qualifies for state championship). Winter practices (November start) with Winter games and matches from last week of November until the end of the first week of March.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Duties:
• Organize and lead parents meetings, practice sessions, supervise all home/away games as directed.
• Attend safety/coaches clinics/schools in accordance with WIAA coaching standards
• Must be able to motivate cheer members and maintain positive rapport with participants and parents.
• Must be able to organize, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate practice sessions, competitions and related activities.
• Keep accurate attendance records for all team members at practices/performances/competitions.
• Properly manage uniforms, supplies and equipment .
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with team members and parents.
• Assist in articulating and enforcing WVSD and WIAA rules/regulations for athletes.
• Emphasize safety precautions, and be aware of the best training and injury procedures.
• Safely transporting/supervising of team as they practice, travel and compete, within WVSD guidelines
• Attend meetings as called by the athletic/activities director.
• Enforce and follow school athletic/activity policy and cheer by-laws as noted in the ASB and Cheer constitutions.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the principal.
• Teach and model the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship during practices and contests.
• Organize try-outs and assist in selecting new squad in accordance with a master plan of selection.
• Promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct the program in harmony with the total school program.
• Demonstrated cooperation with school administration in promoting the total athletic/activities program.
• Take the required WIAA spirit rules clinic for head coaches.
• Maintain WIAA coaching standards and work toward becoming a “preferred” coach.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Credentials: Current First Aid/CPR card required, good driving record.
• Education: Minimum of two years of post-secondary education. 4-year degree preferred.
• Experience: Evidence of successful cheer experience at the high school level preferred.

Demonstrated competencies in organizing and managing student organizations.
Demonstrated effectiveness in written and oral communication with students and parents.
Acceptable methods of teaching, group management, and inter-personal skills

• Personal Qualities: The ability to work with student/athletes and their parents in a professional manner. The successful candidate will work to instill the highest desirable ideals of character and ensure that the welfare of each student/athlete is always held in the highest regard. The candidate should have the ability to be an independent, critical thinker as well as a team player.

STIPEND

$3077-4262** per season (2 seasons) DOE. Post-season stipend possible (1% per practice/performance extraday), depending on football/basketball team results.
