February 2017 - Posts

Black History Month was established in 1926 with the hope that contributions made by African American men and women throughout history would not be forgotten.

To encourage the coordinated teaching of the history of American blacks in the nation's public schools, it is celebrated the second week of February. Two US leaders who helped African Americans gain equality have their birthdays in February as well: President Abraham Lincoln and human rights activist Frederick Douglass. The United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom honor the legacy of the African American men and women who played an integral role in history.

This month, let’s remember the people whose inspiring stories have contributed to our country’s betterment, from Harriet Tubman to George Washington Carver and many more. For a helpful link with more information to share with your family and children about these heroes click here and here.

Class Promise

We want to recognize Beth Poston’s 3rd Grade Class for something special. As a class, all students agree to this “class promise” and each signs as a symbol of their commitment. We love to see this dedication to learning and character building. Great job, Beth Poston, for inspiring greatness!

Read&Write Program

We also want to highlight the Read&Write program in action at Mountainview. This is another great example of the ENGAGE-Blended Learning Challenge. Seen above, the program is being used in Kasey Johansing’s class. This is a word prediction program that intuitively assists students in learning how to write. Great job, Kasey Johansing, for inspiring ways of new learning.

Pride Video!

We are thrilled to share the new West Valley School District Pride Video!

This video captures the journey of our students from Kinder to graduation and the promise our young people hold! We are so proud of our students at all levels as they work and grow with us!

Please take a few minutes to watch this video, and we encourage you to share with friends, family, and the community.

Special thanks to WVHS senior JJ Doria, who captured so much footage of our vibrant district, and to West Valley students, schools, staff and administration.

Watch it here.
