Elementary Attendance Boundaries Change for 2011-12
As a part of the West Valley School District’s planning for the opening of the Freshman Campus and the resulting transitions of fifth and seventh graders, balancing the enrollments in the six elementary schools by adjusting the attendance boundaries was also considered by the School Board. After studying the proposal in the spring of last year, the Board made a decision to postpone the changes for the time being. The plan was reviewed again this fall and the decision was made by the School Board to approve the changes beginning with the 2011-12 school year.
Besides balancing the enrollments in the six elementary schools, the District worked to improve the efficiency of the transportation system. The final consideration in the new attendance area plan was to consider, where possible, anticipated growth in the West Valley. Maps of the new attendance areas will be available at each school office during the upcoming parent/teacher conferences. Affected families will receive specific information from the District via e-mail and/or regular mail in early January.
The School Board’s decision included allowing students who attend one school and would be moved to another school under the new plan to remain at their current school for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 schools years. Parents will have to provide transportation and the “grandfathering” does not apply to younger siblings not currently in school.
The following priorities apply when enrolling students in the District’s elementary schools:
- First priority will be given to the students whose primary residence is in the attendance area; in addition, for the 2011-12 and the 2012-13 school years only, priority will also be given to students whose primary residence was previously in the attendance area and who attended the school during the 2010-11 school year, but were affected by the change to the elementary school boundaries; to be assured of consideration, a request to attend the non-resident school must be received by June 1; this does not apply to siblings who have not attended the requested school.
- The next priority, if space is available, will be given to other students whose primary residence is in the West Valley School District, but in another elementary school attendance area; and
- Finally, students from outside the West Valley School District will be allowed to enroll if space is available.
In each case, transportation to and from school is the obligation of the parent/guardian.
There are two school boundary maps available of the West Valley area. Both are available in small navigable versions along with the entire large map.
